Welcome
This site publicly documents my publicly documentable observations of the Civil Engineering Industry.
While much of this site is dedicated to advancing Bentley Advancing Infrastructure, it is not "approved" or endorsed by Bentley.
Tomorrow
Digital Twins
Digital Twins: they're coming. Are we ready? I'm not ready yet, but I'm working on it. Observations here: Digital Twins
Reality Modeling
Within our civil daily life - our typical project work - OpenRoads extends our interoperability, streamlines our tasks, and eliminates most of our re-work. It transforms what we were already were doing.
Asked by a Surveyor "what's the learning curve going from old InRoads Survey to OpenRoads Designer Survey?" I replied, "Almost nothing. You're already an expert. Things streamline, but don't change for you."
Then I thought, "Oh, except for Reality Modeling." That's brand new and it will truly transform how every project proceeds.
Once you've worked a project with a Reality Model, you'll never want to work without one. And you won't have to wait for a surveyor: DIY: Reality Modeling
Today
How do I use Bentley's Training Resources? I get this question in various forms a LOT.
Where can I find Bentley Training on... I get this question in various forms a LOT.
- Bentley Hidden Gems - I put this together because we have some great content available, but in the warehouse in the closing scene from Raider's of the Lost Ark.
Do you have anything that Bentley missed?

Digital Twins: Roadway
(I'm early in this Work in Progress (feel free to send me links and info))
Dirt Lags Behind. Or does it?
Highway and Site Engineering are in the rearguard of industries moving to Digital Twins.
Earthwork, a major component of our work effort, is rather static.
How do we make the case to our agencies and to Engineering Procurement and Construction Companies?
Different Needs, Different Approaches...
Why: Owner Operators (Transportation Agencies)
Obviously, "digitizing dirt" will not be the digital adoption driver for DOTs.
Drivers for Adoption will lie along
- Reality Modeling - it's a core driver for Digitizing Assets. It also has a lot of enthusiasm and momentum.
- Non-dirt Asset Management: pavement conditions, Road Furniture
- Traffic Signalization and Equipment
- Resiliency
- Readiness
- Response
- Recovery
Why? EPC Companies
Lead your clients. Build credibility and trust as partner in the future.
Expand your Total Addressable Market. If you master this early, you can dramatically expand the scope of your services.

Reality Modeling
I was asked by a city's Survey Lead
"what changes can we expect in our daily workflow when we upgrade to the new software?"
"Nothing: what you do now in your 15-year old software, you do the same thing in the new. A little more streamlined."
But then I thought "Well, you do your old stuff the same way, but you have a whole new world of what you can and eventually will do."
Once designers get a job with some Reality Modeling, they'll never want to go back.
Here's a live view of a 3D reality model. You can explore around it via computer, tablet or cell phone.
It's really high detail, high value as a design tool. |

And here's the thing: the Designers don't need to wait for the Survey Department: if they have a cell phone they can do it themselves.
It took about 30 minutes (5 minutes of camera shots, 10 minutes of file transfer, 10 minutes of kicking off the processing, and 5 minutes of verifying). This video gives a quick overview of the process and how to use it your normal design environment: just reference it in.
You can do this with almost no training (Training is available at Learn.Bentley.com)
Note that there are some rough edges in this capture. It's easy to clean up, but I wanted to show a raw quick take. I hadn't shot anything in two years or so, and I thought my random photo walk would just give me an idea of what I'd have to go out and do properly. Considering the lack of planning and prep on my part, the results are really nice. 30 minutes. Do It Yourself!
Information is at Bentley ContextCapture.
